Berlin Film Festival Names Cristina Nord Head of Forum Sidebar
The film critic, writer and curator will take over Berlin's art house sidebar for the 2020 festival.
The outlines of the Berlin International Film Festival under new bosses Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek are slowly taking shape. Berlin on Thursday named German film critic, writer and curator Cristina Nord the new director of the festival's Forum sidebar, a section focusing on art house cinema.
She will start in her new position on Aug. 1.
An award-winning journalist — she worked as a film editor for the culture section of Berlin's taz newspaper 2002-2015 — Nord has also worked as a university lecturer and curator. In 2015, she joined the Goethe Institute as the Brussels-based director of programming focusing on cultural events in southwestern Europe.
Stefanie Schulte Strathaus will continue to run the Forum Expanded sidebar.
Earlier this week, Chatrian and Rissenbeek — the duo replacing longtime Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick — announced their first major changes for the German festival. They have cut the Culinary Cinema and NATIVe sidebars and added a new competition section, called Encounters, which will focus on more experimental cinema. Further changes are expected this summer.
The 70th Berlin International Festival, the first programmed by the new team, will run Feb. 20 -March 1, 2020.
