The film has just been named Romania's entry in the foreign-language Oscar race.

The Romanian film Aferim!, a Berlin winner and Romania’s entry in the Oscar race, has been picked up by Brooklyn-based art house distributor Big World Pictures for U.S. release.

Radu Jude’s Silver Bear winner is to play U.S. festivals in the months ahead in anticipation of an early 2016 theatrical release, stated Big World Pictures and Beta Cinema, which handles the film's international sales.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Aferim! will be Romania's entry in the foreign-language Oscar race.

Following the Berlin award, the movie also collected prizes at the IndieLisboa International Independent Film Festival and the Sofia International Film Festival.

Set in the early 19th century, the movie chronicles the journey of a local policeman, hired to find a Gypsy runaway slave.

Made as a co-production between Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and France, Aferim! is Jude’s third feature. He is also known for several award-winning shorts, including 2006's The Tube With a Hat, which won the jury prize for international short filmmaking at Sundance and over a dozen other festival awards.
