Bernadette Peters, Victor Garber to Star in Broadway's 'Hello, Dolly!' Revival
Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce will deliver their final performances in the musical in January.
Bernadette Peters is putting on her Sunday clothes for Hello, Dolly! on Broadway.
The seasoned stage actors will step into the lead roles of the hit musical revival next year, producer Scott Rudin has announced. They will begin performances at the Shubert Theatre on Jan. 20 ahead of an opening night on Feb. 22.
Bette Midler, who won a Tony Award for best actress as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the production, and David Hyde Pierce, who stars opposite her as Horace Vandergelder, will deliver their final performances in the roles on Jan. 14.
Directed by Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, the revival of Hello, Dolly! broke the record for best first day of ticket sales in Broadway history and has remained a coveted seat since it began performances on Broadway in March and opened in April. Also starring Gavin Creel and Taylor Trensch, the staging won four Tonys. Throughout the run, Donna Murphy has stepped into the lead role as Midler's alternate.
"I’m absolutely thrilled to continue in the tradition of the incomparable Bette Midler, Carol Channing and all of the other wonderful actresses who have played Dolly Levi, and I look forward to joining this wonderful company at the Shubert," Peters said in a statement.
Added Midler: “I cannot imagine leaving Dolly Levi in better hands than those of Bernadette Peters. She has created more historic roles in more legendary musicals than any living Broadway star, and most of the dead ones, too. I cannot wait to see her in the show from my very expensive premium seat in Row G which I know I will have to pay for. She is joining the greatest group of people I have ever worked with, and when my run in this amazing show — and in this amazing part — is over, I will miss all of them more than I can express. I know they will take care of her the way they have taken care of me — with the heart and generosity they have shown me since day one of rehearsal.”
Garber also stated, “The opportunity to play this role, in this production, with the incomparable Bernadette Peters, is truly a dream come true. I cannot wait to be back where I belong.”
