David Friendly's "Sneakerheadz" looks at collectors "from Kanye to designers like John Varvatos," he tells THR.

This story first appeared in the Oct. 11 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Veteran producer David Friendly (Big Momma's House) is documenting the male footwear-collecting scene in Sneakerheadz, his directing debut.

"From Kanye to designers like John Varvatos, who do custom collaborations, this world is endless," says Friendly, a fan of limited-edition Adidas Superstars. ("I probably have 50 pairs right now.") He's finishing up the expected $350,000 financing on the film through Indiegogo.

So, if Sneakerheadz were nominated for an Academy Award, what would he don at the Oscars?

"Something black, probably patent leather, because I'd be wearing a tuxedo," he says. "I don't have it. But I'd find it!"
