AFM: 'Casino Jack' Producer Forms New Film Venture
Industry veterans Bill Marks and David Miller have partnered to launch V71, a new film acquisition, sales and releasing platform aimed at the world market.
Producer Bill Marks has partnered with A71 Entertainment to form V71, a new film distribution, international sales and production venture.
The new company, unveiled at AFM, combines Marks' production shingle Vortex Pictures and A71 Entertainment, led by David Miller, Chad Maker and Kirk Comrie. Marks' film credits include the Kevin Spacey-starrer Casino Jack; the Western Forsaken, starring Donald Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland; Compulsion, featuring Heather Graham and Carrie-Anne Moss; and A Fighting Man, starring Dominic Purcell, James Caan and Lou Gossett Jr.
V71 has tapped Owen Kelly as head of sales and Susan Curran, formerly executive director of marketing and acquisitions at Anchor Bay Canada, as vp development and marketing, with a focus on studio and third-party relationships.
"A71 has continued to evolve and grow over the years. This is the next step for us as a company that has been built on organic growth from the beginning," said Miller, co-president of A71 Entertainment, in a statement.
"In a complex market, it (V71) brings all the elements in house, and maximizes our ability to see distribution revenue go to the filmmakers," said Bill Marks, president of Vortex Words + Pictures, in his own statement.
New V71 titles to be shopped at AFM include Another Wolfcop, the sequel to the genre pic Wolfcop; Love Sick, starring Adam Brooks, Jay Baruchel, Jessica Pare and Jacob Tierney; and Redwood, starring Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon. The original Wolfcop starred Leo Fafard as an alcoholic cop who blacks out and wakes up as an enraged werewolf.
V71 is also pre-selling Acquainted, directed by Natty Zavitz and starring Giacomo Gianniotti, Johnny Keltz and Laysla De Oliveira.
