Billy Campbell Crime Drama 'Cardinal' Renewed for Second and Third Seasons
Entertainment One, which co-produces the series with Sienna Films and handles worldwide distribution, has sold the mystery thriller across Europe, including to the BBC for the U.K.
Canada's CTV has made its first-ever order for consecutive seasons of a homegrown drama by handing a second- and third-season pick-up to Cardinal, a crime drama starring The Killing alum Billy Campbell and Karine Vanasse.
Entertainment One, which co-produces the series with Sienna Films and handles worldwide distribution, has sold the mystery thriller across Europe, including to the BBC for the U.K. No word yet on a U.S. sale, but eOne is understood to be in active negotiations on additional sales.
The second and third cycles of Cardinal will be shot in northern Ontario, with Campbell and Vanasse returning to the crime scene. The series sees Campbell play a dogged detective named John Cardinal who is burdened by a wrong he committed years ago.
Vanasse plays Cardinal’s partner, Lise Delorme, a shrewd investigator from a small town’s French-speaking community. The first season of six episodes has to date drawn an average 1.2 million viewers on CTV, and the renewal comes ahead of the rookie season finale tomorrow night.
The first season followed Cardinal as he tried to uncover the mystery of what happened to Katie Pine, a missing 13-year-old girl, while coming under investigation by Delorme. Each of the second and third seasons of Cardinal — which is based on John Cardinal Mysteries, a crime novel series written by author Giles Blunt — will be self-contained six-episode runs.
