Biz is bubbly once again
Champagne flows on glitzy red carpetAfter last year's Golden Globes went bust thanks to the WGA strike, the glitz and glamour were back in fashion Sunday on the red carpet, which unfurled around the driveway of the Beverly Hilton and was flanked on both sides by hundreds of TV, radio and print journalists.
Waiters handed out mini-Moet & Chandon bottles to arriving guests, while air kisses were tossed among actors, execs and agents (Alec Baldwin air-kissed Karen Kramer before moving to a photo op with a giant Moet bottle).
Even stars were star-gazing. "I'm a tourist," Ricky Gervais said.
For some, having the Globes back in style and all over the media was welcome.
"It's tremendous for films like 'The Wrestler,'" that film's director, Darren Aronofsky, said between sips of champagne. "I have a good studio (Fox Searchlight) behind me, but we can't compete with the P&A of the some of these bigger movies. It's shows like this that give a platform for American independent film but also for some foreign films and documentaries. Shows like this are the main reason that independent film exploded the way it has."
One agent echoed that sentiment: "I'm just happy for (his client). He gets to spent some time in the limelight. And some of the these movies need that support."
Director Andrew Stanton, who was at the Globes for 2003's "Finding Nemo," said there has been a change in atmosphere for Pixar movies.
"Pixar has released three movies since then and I've noticed an air of gravitas and respect now," he said. "Before, it was like you were lucky to be invited to the table."
Some stars either were out of practice when it comes to red-carpet etiquette or more wise to it: In the first hour, the carpet was barren of major stars before building into a steady flow. Fifteen minutes before the telecast, however, a plethora of A-listers including Steven Spielberg, Beyonce, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell and Miley Cyrus plowed through, avoiding many journalists.
"Interviews are over! Interviews are over!" a security guard yelled.
