Watch the New Trailer for Secret 'Blair Witch' Sequel

The horror flick is set for a September 16 theatrical release.

Seventeen years after The Blair Witch Project spooked audiences at the 1999 summer box office, a sequel to the horror film has been released.

In a surprise twist to San Diego Comic-Con-goers on Friday evening, Lionsgate shocked fans when the studio unveiled that its upcoming film The Woods is, in actuality, a new sequel to the 1999 horror-mystery. Upon entering a screening for the film at SDCC, the studio swapped The Woods posters for the newly unveiled project: Blair Witch.

Set to hit theaters on September 16, 2016, Blair Witch follows a group of college students who venture into Maryland's Black Hills Forest to uncover mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James' sister, who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. During the group's hunt, they are visited by a menacing presence.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the Simon Barrett-penned film stars James Allen McCune, Corbin Reid, Wes Robinson and Valorie Curry.
