Bollywood Actor Ahuja Sentenced to Seven Years for Rape
"Gangster" star goes to jail for assaulting his 20-year-old maid.
NEW DELHI -- Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was sentenced to seven years in prison for raping his 20-year-old maid by a special fast-track court in Mumbai Wednesday.
Ahuja, 38, was first arrested in June 2009 and charged with rape following allegations by his maid that the actor raped her in his Mumbai home. Ahuja was granted bail in October 2009 on the condition that he stay away from Mumbai until the case came to trial. Ahuja returned to his family home in Delhi during that time. Throughout the trial, the actor has maintained his innocence and even claimed he was being framed.
Following Wednesday's judgement, Ahuja's lawyer said the actor would appeal against the sentence.
But despite the victim withdrawing her allegation of rape last year, Wednesday's judgement found the actor guilty based on “circumstantinal evidence” such as the DNA report.
The victim had reportedly said earlier that she was asked to first file the rape case by someone who wanted to implicate Ahuja.
Still on the rise, Ahuja made his film debut with 2004's acclaimed arthouse release Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (A Thousand Desires) followed by mainstream outings like 2006's Gangster. Among his upcoming projects is horror film The Accident produced by Mumbai-based banner Pritish Nandy Communications and U.K.-based High Point Media.
