'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Director to Remake Bollywood Hit

Vidya Balan in "Kahaani"

Denmark's Niels Arden Oplev will direct "Deity," the English remake of 2012's hit thriller "Kahaani," which will be made by "Grace of Monaco" co-producer YRF Entertainment.

YRF Entertainment, the L.A.-based subsidiary of Bollywood banner Yash Raj Films, said Friday that it will remake Bollywood hit Kahaani as English-language feature Deity for international audiences.

Deity will be directed by Danish director Niels Arden Oplev, who made the original 2009 Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Its English remake was directed by David Fincher in 2011, starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

Deity has been scripted by Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Richard Regen (Tehran).

The 2012 thriller Kahaani (Story) starred actress Vidya Balan as a pregnant woman investigating the disappearance of her husband in Kolkata. Directed by Sujoy Ghosh and distributed by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Kahaani was a sleeper hit that crossed the coveted 1 billion rupee mark ($17 million) at the box office.

Deity is described as a thriller with a similar storyline revolving around an American woman who goes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. As she gets closer to the truth, she finds herself at the center of a dangerous conspiracy. The story unfolds in the context of a colorful weeklong festival.

"Niels is the perfect director to transform the appeal of Kahaani to Deity," YRF Entertainment CEO Uday Chopra said in a statement. "Niels has an elevated understanding of both international thrillers and strong female characters, and his vision for capturing the vibrancy and energy of contemporary Kolkata will appeal to audiences in the U.S. and worldwide."

"Deity will be a compelling and exciting thriller with complex and interesting characters", added Arden Oplev. "A neorealistic style to story and images will take the audience deep into Kolkata's many different levels — a fascinating clash between American and Indian culture."

"It's an incredible step by YRF," added Ghosh. "The new script by Jose Rivera and Richard Regen is perfectly suited for the Western audience, and what I am really looking forward to is to see Niels direct this version."

Deity will be financed and produced by YRF Entertainment, with Chopra serving as producer. YRF head of production and development Jonathan Reiman will serve as executive producer.

While a budget was not given, the film is scheduled to begin production in February 2015 and will be shot on location in Kolkata. Its star cast is yet to be announced.

YRF Entertainment recently co-financed Cannes opening film Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, which it produced with Pierre-Ange le Pogam's Stone Angels and Arash Amel. YRF's upcoming projects include Amel's adaptation of Chris Greenhalgh's novel Seducing Ingrid Bergman.
