Bono, Sting set for Pavarotti tribute
Concert set for Oct. 12, will air in 40 countriesROME -- Italian broadcaster Mediaset said it will air a special operatic concert from the historical Jordanian city of Petra in October in order to honor the late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti on what would have been his 73rd birthday.
Pavarotti died a year ago, a month short of his 72nd birthday, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. This year, Mediaset worked out the details for the Oct. 12 tribute with Pavarotti's widow, Nicoletta Mantovani.
Mediaset on Wednesday confirmed media comments from company chairman Fedele Confalonieri, who said that opera singer Jose Carreras will open the concert, which also will feature fellow tenor Roberto Alagna, the orchestra of Eugene Kohn and rock stars Bono and Sting.
The concert will be prerecorded and shown in Italy on Mediaset's Rete4 and will be shown in 40 other countries around the world.
Proceeds will be used to support projects from the World Food Program and the U.N.'s High Commission for Refugees in Afghanistan, as well as several local Jordanian charities. Pavarotti was a longtime supporter of projects aimed at helping refugees.
