Berlinale: Rights for Novels From Isabel Allende, Veronique Olmi on Offer
Best-sellers from Britain, France and Turkey are among the works selling film rights at the annual industry event.
New works from Chilean writer Isabel Allende and French author and playwright Veronique Olmi are among the selections for this year's Books at Berlinale, the industry event where new literary works are offered up to producers for film or TV adaptations.
Allende, whose debut novel The House of the Spirits was turned into a 1993 feature starring Meryl Streep, Winona Ryder and Jeremy Irons, moves across time and space with her latest, In the Midst of Winter. The new novel follows three very different people brought together in a mesmerizing journey that stretches from present-day Brooklyn back to 1970s Chile and Brazil. Spain's Agencia Literaria Carmen Balcells is selling film rights.
Olmi's latest novel, Bakhita, which is being handled by Editions Albin Michel in France, traces the life of Josephine Margaret Bakhita, a 19th century former Sudanese slave who became a Catholic nun and dedicated her life to the poor. Pope John Paul II made her a saint in 2000.
The 12 international works picked for this year's Books at Berlinale include Brit thriller Where the Missing Go from crime journalist turned novelist Emma Rowley; children's pirate tale Captain Horror’s Island from Greek writer Rodoula Pappa; and Hitler’s Feast, a historical novel from Italian author Rosella Postorino, which tells the true story of 10 women who acted as Adolf Hitler's official food tasters in the Fuhrer Bunker.
The 2018 Books at Berlinale will be held Feb. 19 as part of the festival's co-production market. Publishers who hold the rights to the selected titles will meet with literary agents and producers interested in adapting the works for the screen. The 2018 Berlin Film Festival runs Feb. 15-Feb. 25.
