'Bourne' leader once again at int'l boxoffice

The last of the summer tentpoles almost single-handedly kept the international boxoffice momentum going over the weekend as "The Bourne Ultimatum" finished No. 1 by raking in an estimated $20.8 million from 4,333 screens in 46 markets.
The otherwise undistinguished early fall stanza was notable for debut action in the U.K., the largest foreign market for American films. Sony's "Superbad," which has grossed $111.3 million domestically, opened to an estimated $2.9 million from 425 screens, placing either second or third in the territory. ("Superbad" also opened in New Zealand with about $155,000 from 53 locations.)
Lionsgate's "3:10 to Yuma," the Western co-starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale that has generated about $28.6 million in two Stateside frames, also made its U.K. bow with an estimated $750,000 from 303 screens. And New Line's actioner "Shoot 'Em Up," with Clive Owen, gunned down an estimated $780,000 from 294 locations.
Topping the U.K. market for the second consecutive weekend was New Line/Entertainment Film Distributors' "Run, Fat Boy, Run." Director David Schwimmer's comedy nabbed an estimated $3.6 million from 411 screens for a market cume of about $9 million.
Working Title Films/Universal International's "Atonement" starring Keira Knightley was second or third in the U.K. with an estimated $2.9 million from 412 locations, a mere 9% drop from its opening stanza. The 10-day market cume for the film adaptation of Ian McEwan's romance novel stands is $8.9 million.
DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures International's "Disturbia" also made its U.K. debut and grossed an estimated $1.4 million from 405 screens. Overall, the serial killer thriller took in about $3.1 million from 1,321 locations in 51 markets for an overseas cume of $28.3 million.
PPI also introduced "A Mighty Heart" in Germany, Spain and four other smaller European markets. The drama starring Angelina Jolie as the wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl grossed about $1 million from 355 screens.
Since its mid-August overseas bow and with 14 markets still to play, "Bourne" has accumulated an international gross of $125 million, surpassing the foreign tallies of its series predecessors, 2002's "The Bourne Identity" ($92 million) and 2004's "The Bourne Supremacy" ($112 million).
The spy thriller starring Matt Damon, the No. 1 overseas attraction in four of the past five stanzas, opened in 10 markets last weekend, most notably displacing Disney's "Ratatouille" in the top spot in France with an estimated $4.4 million from 462 screens for a solid $9,524 per-screen average and a 35% market share.
"Bourne" also finished No. 1 in Belgium ($860,000 at 58 sites for a 45% market share and a $14,828 per-screen average), in the Netherlands ($1 million at 92 spots for nearly $10,870 per screen) and in Norway ($776,000 from 62 dates or $12,516 per screen).
In typhoon-whipped Korea, Jason Bourne landed another No. 1 with an estimated $3.6 million from 219 locations, a $16,438 per-screen average. It was UI's second-biggest Korea opening ever after 2005's "King Kong" remake from Peter Jackson. "Bourne" also opened No. 2 in Sweden ($695,000 from 67 sites).
In holdover action, "Bourne" remained No. 1 in Germany with an estimated $2.8 million from 658 locations for an 11-day market cume of $8.6 million. In Australia, it finished No. 2 in its third weekend with $1.8 million from 251 screens for an 18-day cume of $12.8 million. A fourth-place finish in the U.K. in its fifth weekend lifted "Bourne's" 31-day market cume there to $42.6 million.
Placing No. 2 on the weekend was 20th Century Fox International's "The Simpsons Movie," which opened in Italy to an estimated $8.7 million from 702 screens, which Fox says is the biggest market opening ever for an animation title. The overall weekend tally for Homer and company was an estimated $10.5 million from about 3,000 screens in 28 markets. Overseas cume stands at $321 million.
Finishing third was Disney's "Ratatouille," which cooked up an estimated $5.5 million from 3,092 situations in 34 territories, all holdovers. In France, where Remy the rat ruled No. 1 for six consecutive frames, "Ratatouille" wound to No. 2 with $1.5 million from 720 sites, lifting its market cume to $54.5 million -- the largest gross total of any title that has played France this year.
No. 4 was DreamWorks/PPI's "Shrek the Third," which grossed an estimated $5.3 million from 1,700 sites in 64 markets, lifting its international total to $459 million. No. 5 Warner Bros. International's "No Reservations," the restaurant romancer with Catherine Zeta-Jones that generated an estimated $4.9 million from 1,950 screens in 44 territories. Cume is $24.5 million.
UI's "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," with Adam Sandler and Kevin James, yielded an estimated $4.1 million from 1,575 dates in 25 markets for a cume of $20.5 million. "Surf's Up," the Sony Animation title, lifted its international cume to $43.1 million thanks to an estimated $3.4 million weekend at 2,405 screens in 35 markets.
Thanks largely to a strong Spain opening, Fox's "Die Hard 4.0" generated an estimated $2.4 million on the weekend from about 900 screens in 15 markets for an overseas cume of $233.8 million. UI's "Knocked Up" drew $2.3 million from 1,325 screens in 23 territories for an international cume of $48.5 million.
Other overseas cume updates: UI's "Evan Almighty," $54.2 million; DreamWorks/PPI's "Transformers," $381 million; WBI's "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," $639.1 million; PPI's "Stardust," $17.4 million; and WBI's "Ocean's Thirteen," $191.8 million.
