Bow set for Feng Xiaogang's first rom-com

'If You Are the One' stars Ge You, Hsu Chi

BEIJING -- Huayi Brothers Pictures will release director Feng Xiaogang's first romantic comedy "If You Are the One" on Dec. 22, a company spokeswoman said Monday.

Shot for $8 million in Beijing and Hangzhou, China, and Hokkaido, Japan, "If You Are the One" stars comedian Ge You ("The Banquet") as a successful entrepreneur who seeks a mate via an online personal ad. He ends up getting involved with the gorgeous Hsu Chi ("Blood Brothers"), a young woman rebounding from an affair with a married man.

Feng, 50, wrote the screenplay with Chen Guofu, who also penned the screenplay for Chen Kaige's upcoming "Mei Lanfang."

The film is a departure for Feng, said a spokeswoman for Huayi, the longtime backer of the director of such contemporary Chinese classics as "Cell Phone" (2003).

"This film is a love story with comedic elements, which is a first for Feng," Huayi Brothers sales director Felice Bee told The Hollywood Reporter.

Media Asia in Hong Kong co-produced the film with Huayi Brothers, which will distribute in China on the wide scale Huayi did in 2007 with Feng's last film, the war epic "Assembly." That film went out on more than 700 35mm prints and more than 200 digital prints.

Premiere events in Hangzhou and Beijing are in the works, Bee said, though the film must still be approved by censors at the film bureau.
