Box Office: 'Neighbors' Doing Strong Business Friday as It Aims to Out-Gross 'Spider-Man 2'

It's a tight race between the Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy and the holdover superhero sequel.

Neighbors is getting a warm Mother's Day weekend welcome, showing strong numbers at Friday's box office, and the R-rated comedy could top the weekend if it manages to edge out holdover The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy grossed a solid $2.56 million on Thursday night and, according to early numbers Friday, may take in $16 million to $18 million for its first full day of release, which would result in a weekend total in the low-to-mid $40 million range.

Directed by Nick Stoller, the filmmaker behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and The Five-Year Engagement, Neighbors was produced by This Is the End team Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. (Rogen and Goldberg also directed that 2013 end-of-the-world comedy.) The trio is producing Neighbors alongside Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake's Good Universe banner. The film follows a young couple (Rogen and Rose Byrne) with a new baby, whose quiet suburban lifestyle is ruined when a rowdy frat moves in next door.

Sony's Spider-Man sequel, now in its second weekend in theaters, is on track to earn around $40 million this weekend. The Andrew Garfield-starring franchise film, which grossed $91.6 million in North America last weekend and has collected north of $450 million globally, will continue to do strong business overseas this weekend.

The success of the weekend's other new film, the female-centered Christian comedy Moms' Night Out, will be determined by whether or not the religious audiences who supported recent faith-based dramas God's Not Dead and Heaven Is for Real also comes out to support a comedy. Distributors estimate the Patricia Heaton-starrer making between $5 million and $7 million in its debut.

In the film, a stressed-out mother of young children (Grey's Anatomy's Sarah Drew) attempts an outing with other moms from the same congregation, including Heaton. Her production company, FourBoys Films, is a producer. The film also stars Heaton's husband, David Hunt, along with Sean Astin and country music star Trace Adkins as a tattooed biker who comes to the aid of the women when their plans go awry.
