Box Office: 'Nerve' Strikes With $3.8M Opening Day
The techno-thriller, starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco, is opening midweek to get a jump on the competition.
Lionsgate's Nerve opened to $3.8 million on Wednesday from 2,538 theaters thanks in large part to younger femmes.
The techno-thriller, starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco, placed No. 2 behind Star Trek Beyond, which earned nearly $5 million. Based on the 2012 novel of the same name and adapted for the big screen by Jessica Sharzer, Nerve revolves around two young strangers who meet after enlisting in a dangerous online game. Juliette Lewis also stars.
Lionsgate decided to open Nerve midweek to get a jump on the other two new movies opening nationwide Friday: Jason Bourne and the female-skewing comedy Bad Moms. At this pace, Nerve is eyeing a $13 million to $15 million five-day debut.
Nerve, directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, was awarded an A- CinemaScore overall and an A among moviegoers under the age of 25. The film cost just under $20 million to produce.
Wednesday's gross included $1.1 million grossed in Tuesday night previews.
