According to nail stylist Jenna Hipp, his nail art may be just a result of having little ones at home

While presenting an award at last weekend’s Palm Springs International Film Festival (and leading a sing-along about David Oyelowo’s name), Brad Pitt sported an accessory a little flashier than normal: rainbow nail art on several fingers. And while we’re accustomed to people like Johnny Depp, Jared Leto and Snoop Dogg (and now Bruce Jenner) wearing polish, it seems a bit out of character for the actor. But is it?

“Perhaps it’s a new trend on the rise — a new way to make a statement, send a message or confuse the press,” says celebrity nail stylist Jenna Hipp (whose clients include Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Garner and Taylor Swift). “Or maybe it’s just a dad having fun at home with his kids and not giving a damn what anyone else thinks.” Hipp is fairly certain it’s the latter.

The manicure expert believes Pitt was sporting nail wraps, which she says are simple to apply and remove — so easy one of his children could do it. “He could have easily peeled them off before the event, but he chose not to, and that certainly sends a bold message,” she continues. “Guys are curious, there’s no doubt about it. You know they sneak into your expensive face cream and read your girly magazines.”

It appears having kids isn’t a prerequisite though: Liam Hemsworth recently stepped out in flip-flops with his toenails each painted different colors of the rainbow. Says Hipp: “I’ve actually painted Liam’s nails before for laughs when he was with Miley [Cyrus], but holy shit, I don’t know if I can handle this trend on guys!”

Though, Hipp says, most guys want to portray a manly, no-nonsense approach in public, “deep down they also have a soft side that isn’t hard to tap into, especially with 8-year-old little girls.” So there you have it: It’s called being a dad.
