'Breaking Bad' Director Launches Production Banner
The first production from Gisla & Renck, formed by Johan Renck and producer Svana Gisla, is David Bowie's 10-minute video for his 'The Last Panthers' TV theme.
Swedish TV and commercials director Johan Renck has teamed with Icelandic producer Svana Gisla to form new London-based production banner Renck & Gisla, focused on advertising and music videos and the development of creative content for film and TV.
The first production from the company is a 10-minute video for "Blackstar," David Bowie's theme song for new crime series The Last Panthers, which was directed by Renck and stars Samantha Morton, John Hurt and Tahar Rahim. Backed by Sky Atlantic and Canal+, the drama will air on SundanceTV next year. Bowie's video — brokered with the help of Gisla and the first time the artist has contributed an original piece of music for film or TV in 20 years — will debut on Sky on Thursday.
“It seemed like a logical next step; we have known each other for 15 years, the uncompromising quality of his work and his appetite to constantly push himself is inspiring and exciting to be around, and I enjoy trying to keep up with him," said Gisla, who got Grammy and Emmy nominations for HBO's Jonas Akerlund-directed On the Run Tour: Beyond and Jay Z. "The Bowie project is a perfect example of what joining our forces can do."
Renck, who helmed three episodes of Breaking Bad alongside videos for Madonna, Beyonce and Kylie Minogue, said that he was always looking for the "perfect partner for a simple, all-compassing two-man shop and then she was right in front of me all along."
He added: "I sense that this venture will give us the freedom and the agility to engage in whatever we feel like any given day. Our ability to speak with the same voice in any matter, combined with our shared lust for playfulness, makes choices and decisions simple."
Renck is represented by Reset in the U.S. and 75 TV in Paris.
