Brexit Campaigner and Former London Mayor Boris Johnson Out of U.K. Leadership Bid

Boris Johnson - H - 2016

Johnson had been favorite to succeed David Cameron, who revealed he would step down as prime minister after the U.K.'s vote to leave the European Union.

Boris Johnson, the former London mayor recently likened to Donald Trump in the U.S., who led the U.K. Brexit campaign and was the front-runner to succeed David Cameron as prime minister, has announced he is not bidding for leadership.

The politician and media personality made the announcement on Wednesday after his fellow Brexit Leave campaigner Michael Gove revealed his candidacy, a move many believed meant Johnson was out of the running.

Justice Secretary Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May are thought to be the two favorites to become prime minister in September after Cameron officially steps down.
