An investigation is ongoing.

A stagehand has died following a tragic accident while working inside Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre, the New York City Police Department confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 9 a.m. on Thursday at 770 Seventh Avenue, the Winter Garden Theater.  Inside, a 54-year-old male was discovered lying on the floor "with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated height," police said.

The victim was transported to Mount Sinai hospital where he was pronounced dead. "Preliminary investigation has determined that the victim fell from a ladder while performing routine maintenance. No criminality suspected at this time," the department told THR.

The death is currently under investigation. The identity of the deceased is pending family notification.

Though Broadway continues to be dark amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, Scott Rudin's The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman was set to begin performances at the Winter Garden Theatre on Dec. 20, 2021. The New York Post, which was first to report the incident, reports that the stagehand was clearing props from the production of Beetlejuice so preparation for The Music Man could begin.
