BSkyB's intended Picnic launch delayed

Ofcom conducting wider investigation

LONDON -- BSkyB's bid to launch stand-alone digital terrestrial platform Picnic has been hit by extended investigations announced Tuesday by media regulator Ofcom.

BSkyB announced plans to launch a four-channel DTT service offering access to Sky One, Sky Sports and Sky News in February 2007, but has been awaiting the findings of Ofcom's investigation into whether it will impact the pay TV market.

Ofcom is now conducting the wider inquiry into competition within the pay television market in parallel with the original inquiry, potentially reporting by the end of summer.

BSkyB declined comment on the delay.
