'Burning' to bow on DirecTV

VOD offering to debut a month before theatrical release

In a move that adds a wrinkle to the traditional film-distribution model, DirecTV will debut Guillermo Arriaga's "The Burning Plain," starring Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger, as a VOD offering nearly a month before the film's theatrical release.

The satellite net said Wednesday that it will launch the drama Aug. 21 as a DirecTV Cinema offering in HD and standard definition.

The film, produced by 2929 Entertainment, Parkes/MacDonald Prods. and Costa Films and first unveiled at last year's Venice Film Festival, won't hit theaters until Sept. 17. It then will continue to play simultaneously on DirecTV at reduced prices.
