BVITV inks German PPV deal

COLOGNE, Germany -- Buena Vista International Television has signed a multiyear licensing deal with the On Demand Group for pay-per-view rights to BVITV films in Germany.

ODG will act as BVITV's partner, supplying films to Select KINO, the on-demand service of German cable giant Kabel Deutschland.

The deal, signed Monday by BVITV managing director Tom Toumazis and ODG chief executive Tony Kelly, includes German PPV rights to such films as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," Kevin Costner starrer "The Guardian" and family comedy "The Shaggy Dog."

ODG and BVITV, together with Sony Pictures, operate video-on-demand service FilmFlex in the U.K.

On-demand services are still in their infancy in Germany but the market is growing quickly. Along with Kabel Deutschland, local media giants including Deutsche Telekom, pay TV group Premiere and free-TV powerhouse ProSiebenSat.1 all have recently launched on-demand services.
