Cain, Jones in 'Protect' squad


Dean Cain has been tapped to star and Tamala Jones to co-star in CBS' drama pilot "Protect and Serve," "Rome" star Polly Walker has joined CBS' untitled Cynthia Cidre drama pilot, and Paige Turco and Jessica Collins have been added to ABC's untitled Jon Feldman drama pilot.

Additionally, Raquel Welch has come aboard CBS' comedy pilot "The Captain," Jake Busey has joined Fox's comedy pilot "Playing Chicken," JD Walsh and Josh Meyers have been cast in CBS' untitled Scott Silveri comedy pilot, Tim Russ and Melissa McCarthy have joined ABC's comedy pilot "Sam I Am," and Sean O'Bryan has been added to Fox's comedy pilot "Two Families."

  "Protect," from NBC Uni TV, follows the lives of street cops in suburban Los Angeles. Cain will play a veteran officer. Jones will play the wife of another cop (Steve Harris). Also cast in the project as officers' wives are Jessica Pare and Victoria Cartagena. Cain will next be seen in the CBS original movie "Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness" and the indie "September Down." He is repped by Paradigm. Jones will next be seen in the features "What Love Is" and "Show Stoppers." She is repped by APA and Allman Rea Management.

  The untitled Cynthia Cidre project, from CBS Par TV and ABC TV, revolves round three generations of the Duques, a powerful Latin American family. Walker will play the leader of the rival Samuels family. Walker, who plays Atia of the Julii on HBO's "Rome," is repped by Gersh and manager Jon Rubinstein. She is one of several "Rome" alums to land major roles this pilot season. Kevin McKidd plays the lead in NBC's drama "Journeyman," Ray Stevenson plays a lead in CBS' drama pilot "Babylon Fields," while Zuleikha Robinson got a role on Fox's drama pilot "New Amsterdam."

  The untitled Jon Feldman project, from WBTV, centers on four high-powered CEOs and CEOs-to-be (Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan, Christopher Titus, Joshua Malina) who are friends and members of the same golf club. Turco will play McDermott's character's ex-wife. Collins will play Malina's character's mistress. The casting stems from Turco's talent holding deal with ABC. Turco (Gersh) will next be seen in the feature "The Game Plan." Collins (Innovative Artists, manager Rick Ax, attorney Neil Meyer) co-starred on Feldman's "Tru Calling."

  "Captain," from CBS Par TV, revolves around the characters who live in an old Hollywood building. Welch will play a former TV star and bombshell.

  "Chicken," from WBTV and Werner-Gold-Miller, centers on two brothers at odds who come together after one (Norbert Leo Butz) is paralyzed in an accident. Busey (Innovative Artists, Kritzer Levine Wilkins) will play a dim and laid-back guy. He recently wrapped the feature "Play Dead" and the CBS miniseries "Comanche Moon."

  The untitled Scott Silveri comedy, from WBTV, centers on a group of people, two of them played by Walsh and Meyers, who hang out at an all-night grill. Walsh (Stone Manners, Kritzer Levine Wilkins) recurs on "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "Two and a Half Men." "Mad TV" alum Meyers was recently seen in "Date Movie."

  "Families," from 20th TV and HIP, revolves around two sets of adult siblings, one of them played by O'Bryan (Domain, Alan Siegel Entertainment), who share the same father (Beau Bridges).

  "Sam," from ABC TV Studio and Brillstein-Grey TV, centers on Sam (Christina Applegate), a woman with amnesia who has to rediscover her life. Smart will play her self-absorbed mother. Russ (Stone Manners, manager Greg Edwards) will play the doorman at Sam's building. McCarthy (TalentWorks) will play a former friend of Sam's who reappears in her life.

In other pilot casting news, Penn Badgley (WMA, Raw Talent) has landed a lead role on CW's drama pilot "Gossip Girl," and Tracy Vilar (Don Buchwald & Associates, Raw Talent) has joined the cast of NBC's comedy "Wildlife."
