Caleb Deschanel to Receive AFI Alumni Award

The cinematographer and director will be presented with the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal at the gala honoring Steve Martin.

Caleb Deschanel will receive the 2015 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal at the AFI Life Achievement Gala honoring Steve Martin, which will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on June 4.

The medal is presented annually to an alumnus of the AFI Conservatory, which Deschanel, the cinematographer and director, attended as a member of the class of 1969.

Deschanel has been nominated five times for the cinematography Oscar for his work on The Right Stuff, The Natural, Fly Away Home, The Patriot and The Passion of the Christ. He also shot Carroll Ballard's 1979 film The Black Stallion and has served as director of photography on Warren Beatty's upcoming untitled film about Howard Hughes

Deschanel's own directorial credits include The Escape Artist and Crusoe. He was honored by the American Society of Cinematographers with that group's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
