The Chicest Place to Shop Local This Holiday Season
C Magazine has opened a pop-up store at Westfield Century City devoted to the best of California.
The pages of C Magazine, which chronicles in glossy fashion the California lifestyle, have come to life at a new store opened just in time for the holidays, with an e-commerce site to follow by the end of this week.
State of Mind, now open next to Tesla inside the newly renovated Westfield Century City mall, features some of the Golden State’s most stylish offerings, from Heather Taylor Home's homespun tea towels ($22) to a tribal-modern Kelly Wearstler totem sculpture ($13,500), Shiva Rose's melt-in-your-hand face balm ($65) to a vintage copy of the 1982 California Artists Cookbook and other wonderfully regionally appropriate titles from vintage book dealer The Librarian.
“It’s 150 curated brands by our editors,” the magazine’s founder/editorial director Jennifer Hale said at the store-opening party Tuesday night. “We took it as an opportunity, when Westfield just relaunched, to be next to Tesla and be part of this California moment. And it’s our first foray into retail, but it may not be our last.”
Designed in collaboration with Martha Mulholland (whose retail projects include the Los Angeles outpost of The Line) and retail partners Self Employed, the 1,000-square-foot store features a large-scale mural by fashion-world fave Donald Robertson, and clothing by Cali-chic Rosetta Getty, Brock, Elder Statesman, Libertine and Rodarte; shoes by Esquivel; handbags by Kendall Conrad; jewelry by Lisa Eisner (including her fab "Sunset" bib necklace), Jennifer Meyer, Rebecca de Ravenel and Sarah-Jane Wilde; and more. There are also collectible surfboards by Britt Merrick for H. Merrick and an only-in-L.A. bejeweled vaporizer pendant by Daniela Villegas for luxe cannabis brand Beboe.
The opening dinner party, held just outside the store in one of the outdoor mall’s thoroughfares, felt like a family reunion for California lifestyle purveyors that had Valerie Confections’ Valerie Gordon (her chocolates are featured in the store alongside caviar from Roe, honey from One Gun Ranch and more) hobnobbing with florist and perfumer Eric Buterbaugh; jeweler Sarah Jane Wilde (wearing best friend Thom Browne’s perilously stylish ice skate boots) swapping stories with Kendall Conrad over dessert; and more.
As Hale put it, “It’s the C Family." And now you can visit them all in one place.
