'Californication' takes root along with fertile 'Weeds'

Bows strong on Mon. for Showtime

Monday's Season 3 premiere of "Weeds" on Showtime grew well, while the premiere of the cabler's new comedy "Californication" re-tained the bulk of the "Weeds" audience.

"Weeds" drew 824,000 viewers for its first play at 10 p.m. EDT and 390,000 on its second run an hour later, according to Nielsen Media Research. That's 43% higher than the Season 2 premiere and the best night yet for the comedy starring Mary-Louise Parker. The Season 2 premiere in November averaged 626,000 viewers.

"Californication," which stars David Duchovny, averaged 550,000 viewers at 10:30 p.m. and 245,000 viewers at 11:30 p.m., Nielsen said. It did better for the night than "Weeds" did when it premiered.

The night was behind another recent debut, April's "The Tudors," which averaged 1.3 million viewers for both plays on its premiere.
