Canadian nets grab HBO's 'Pu-239'

TORONTO -- Canadian pay TV channels Movie Central and the Movie Network said Tuesday that they have acquired the HBO thriller "Pu-239" for a day-and-date release next month.

The HBO movie, executive produced by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, will air at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 on Movie Central in western Canada -- an hour ahead of the stateside HBO bow at 8 p.m.

"Pu-239," which is set in 1995 post-Soviet Russia, also will air on the same night at 9 p.m. on the Movie Network, the eastern Canadian premium pay TV service.

HBO and Showtime original movies and dramas come to Movie Central and the Movie Network via output deals.

The latest "Pu-239" acquisition comes as upstart Canadian premium pay network Superchannel gets set to launch Friday, a move that provides first-time competition for the two pay TV giants.
