Canadian TV Network Launches Mandarin Newscast

Shaw Media will launch a Chinese-language version of its flagship Global News telecast nightly at 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. in Vancouver and Calgary, just across the water from China.

TORONTO – How do you say ‘Breaking News’ in Mandarin?

Canadian broadcaster Shaw Media now knows after unveiling plans Tuesday to launch a Mandarin-language version of its flagship national TV newcast, Global News.

The 30-minute Global National Mandarin newscast will launch on Chinese New Year, January 23, 2012, and air weeknights at 7pm and 11:30pm in Vancouver and Calgary.

Both west coast Canadian markets sit across the water from China and have Mandarin as the mother tongue for an increasing local TV audience.

Faced with that diversity, Shaw Media will tailor the Global News Mandarin newscast with breaking news items and local Mandarin-speaking pundits.

The Global National Mandarin anchor and on-air team will be unveiled next month.

Rival broadcaster Rogers Media already operates OMNI-branded multi-lingual TV channels, and the CBC provides a Punjabi-language version of its Hockey Night in Canada telecast on Saturday nights.
