Canal 11 hands reins to helmer Sarinana

MEXICO CITY -- Fernando Sarinana, filmmaker of such Mexican boxoffice hits as "Charm School" and "Gimme the Power," has been named director of public broadcaster Canal 11.

Sarinana replaces Julio Di-Bella, who took the reins of Canal 11 during former President Vicente Fox's administration.

Canal 11 is Latin America's oldest government-owned television broadcaster. In 2004, under an agreement with DirecTV, the pubcaster entered the U.S. market with a 24-hour channel.

Sarinana produced and directed Columbia Pictures Producciones Mexico's "Charm School," which ranked No. 2 last year in domestic boxoffice receipts.
