Cannes: Buyers Hot for Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann's 'Bad Moms'
Apatow, Mann's husband, will produce the film together with Bill Block, whose Block Entertainment is handling world sales.
International buyers want Leslie Mann to give them parenting advice.
Major foreign distributors, including Germany's Constantin, the U.K.'s Entertainment Film Distributor, Australia's Roadshow Films and Canada's Entertainment One have pre-bought Bad Moms, aka Troublemakers, the upcoming comedy starring Mann from The Hangover writing team of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.
In the film, Mann plays an overworked and exhausted mother who joins forces with two other “bad moms” to challenge the helicopter parents that rule over their kids' school. John Friedberg of Block Entertainment, who is producing Bad Moms and selling it internationally, told THR the concept of the film, along with the cache of Apatow and Mann, made the project a must have for international buyers.
“If you look at the other projects on offer (in Cannes), we really have the only broad commercial movie, in juxtaposition to films that are either prestige titles or small,” Friedberg said. “For the big commercial distributors, they want something that checks all the boxes.”
Mann's husband, 40-Year-Old Virgin director Judd Apatow, will produce the film together with Block Entertainment CEO Bill Block. Friedberg, a Block Entertainment partner, will executive produce. Bad Moms will shoot in July. Paramount Pictures acquired the film last week for the U.S. and has set a wide release for April 15, 2016.
Other territories that have pre-bought the title include Benelux (Dutch Filmworks), Eastern Europe (Freeman/Monolith/Blitz), Middle East (Gulf Film), Switzerland (Ascot Elite) and Israel (United King).
