Cannes: Amazon, STX Team for Nash Edgerton's Directorial Project
The action-comedy stars David Oyelowo, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron.
Amazon Studios and STX Entertainment are teaming up for Nash Edgerton's directorial project.
The deal marks the first collaboration between STX and the streaming giant, which has designed its strategy to include working with a traditional distributor to release its films in theaters. (For its projects premiering in Cannes, Amazon teamed with Lionsgate for Cafe Society and Broad Green for Neon Demon.)
Actor-director Edgerton's currently untitled film will star David Oyelowo, Nash's brother Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron. The action-comedy centers on a businessman (Oyelowo) who seems to be living the American dream with a new wife and a stake in a pharmaceutical company that's about to go public. Then everything falls apart, and he ends up stranded south of the border, discovering that his seemingly perfect life never really existed.
Thandie Newton, Yul Vazquez and Sharlto Copley round out the cast. Anthony Tambakis and Matt Stone wrote the script for the film, which is currently in production in Mexico City. STX will be handling international sales on the film in Cannes.
Amazon Studios, Nash Edgerton, Rebecca Yeldham, Anthony Tambakis, A.J. Dix and Beth Kono are producing while Trish Hofmann will executive produce.
Robert Simonds' STX previously released Joel Edgerton's directorial debut, The Gift, as one of its first films. The thriller, starring Jason Bateman, received strong reviews and earned $59 million worldwide.
