Cannes: 'Green Room' Finds U.K. Home With Picturehouse, Altitude

Jeremy Saulnier's Patrick Stewart-starring punk-rock horror thriller had its premiere in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar.

Green Room, Jeremy Saulnier's "batshit crazy pun-krock horror thriller" follow-up to 2013's Blue Ruin, has been picked up by Picturehouse Entertainment and Altitude Film Entertainment for U.K. distribution.

The two London-based outfits teamed up for the acquisition from WestEnd Films, marking the second joint deal between Picturehouse and Altitude after last year's The Connection from Cedric Jimenez.

Starring Patrick Stewart, Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots, Green Room sees a group of luckless punk rockers travel to a remote woodland gig in Oregon only to find themselves hemmed in by far-right skinheads. In a gory confrontation, characters are picked off by guns, machetes and even throat-ripping Rottweilers. Like Blue Ruin, it had its world premiere in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar of Cannes.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have jointly acquired this insane, stylish and bloody picture — a mix of Assault on Precinct 13 and Texas Chainsaw Massacre but with its own unique flavor — and to continue working with Jeremy after the brilliant and inventive Blue Ruin," said Clare Binns, Picturehouse's director of programming & acquisitions.

"This film had me transfixed for 90 gloriously violent and funny minutes, and I can't wait to bring this to the U.K. It's also great that we're acquiring again with Altitude, whose taste and team are really second to none."

Added Will Clarke, joint CEO and chairman of Altitude: "We are really excited about Jeremy Saulnier’s stylish and savage thriller, which is highly original and full of surprises. With a great cast and a fantastic soundtrack I think we have a real horror classic, and we can’t wait to partner with Picturehouse once more in releasing this film."

Saulnier said that following Picturehouse's release of Blue Ruin, he was excited to be collaborating with the company again.

"I find that Picturehouse approaches distribution the same way I approach filmmaking — as film fans first and foremost," he said. "That spirit will ensure Green Room not only reaches a wider audience, but that it will be presented with sheer cinematic delight!"
