Cannes: Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Liberace Bring Music to the Festival
Soundtracks for "The Great Gatsby," "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "The Bling Ring" give the 66th annual fest a musical look.
Jay-Z and rap in the 1920s, Justin Timberlake strumming folk music in the 1960s and the story of Liberace give the 66th annual Festival de Cannes an inordinately musical look.
Timberlake stars in the Coen Brothers' folk music drama Inside Llewyn Davis, which will be making its world premiere in the competition section of the festival that runs May 15-26. Marcus Mumford and T Bone Burnett did the music for the film set during the folk music boom on the early 1960s and based on the memoirs of the late Dave Van Ronk. CBS had not yet announced a release date.
Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby is the festival's opening night film, though it will already be in theaters in the States by then. The film's soundtrack, which Jay-Z executive produced, features new material from Hova, Will.i.am, Lana Del Rey and Florence and the Machine plus a cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" by Beyonce and Andre 3000 and Emeli Sandé's rendition of "Crazy in Love" with the Bryan Ferry Orchestra.
Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, which will play on HBO starting May 26, will premiere at the festival. Starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, HBO is pitching the movie as "before Elvis, before Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was Liberace."
It's likely Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, the opening film of Cannes' Un Certain Regard sidebar, will have a musical landscape similar to her previous films. Brian Reitzell (formerly of Redd Kross) is music supervisor on the film, reprising the role he had on her films Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides.
Another film of musical note is J.C. Chandor's All is Lost, a film noted for Robert Redford in a dialogue-free performance. Alex Ebert, leader of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, makes his debut as a composer on the film and has written an end credits song as well.
