Cannes: Paparazzi, Fans Blocked From amfAR Gala Amid Security Concerns
As Cannes steps up security, paparazzi and fans will be barred from standing outside the festival's biggest party May 25.
The days of Chris Tucker shaking hands, Will Smith showing off his dance moves and Sharon Stone signing autographs, or Eva Longoria, Eva Herzigova and Adriana Lima posing and smiling with fans in front of the Hotel du Cap outside of the amfAR Gala are over.
Due to security concerns, this year only people with invitations will be able to access the street for the grand procession of black cars on the film festival’s biggest night — that includes pedestrian fans and paparazzi that snap pics of the celebrities exiting their vehicles.
"Unfortunately this is true. No pedestrians, paparazzi or fans will be allowed at the front of the Hotel du Cap entrance or on the road to the amfAR Gala due to security," a representative for the organization confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
A rep for the Antibes police explained that there was a new security perimeter, adding that barricades would be at least 300 meters down the hill from the entrance to the hotel from 3 p.m. on May 25 to 3 a.m. the following day.
While cars have long been restricted to those with an official pass further down the road, the new restrictions mean pedestrians and paparazzi will now be blocked from walking up the hill on Boulevard John F. Kennedy on one side and Boulevard Marechal Juin on the other. Only residents with a photo ID will be allowed to pass.
A rep for the hotel added that security is heightened for the entire festival period, and cars entering the grounds will be searched.
Indeed, Ubers entering for the Swarovski luncheon Wednesday were required to open their trunks for security searches, while several security guards were stationed outside of the curved wrought iron gates to the hotel.
However, people are still welcome to come to the storied Bellini Bar for a $39 namesake cocktail or lunch at the hotel during the week — with reservations, of course.
