Vertical Entertainment and DirecTV have acquired North American rights to Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff’s The Strange Ones, starring Alex Pettyfer, James Freedson-Jackson, Emily Althaus and Gene Jones.

Written by Radcliff, the film revolves around two travelers making their way across a remote American landscape. On the surface all seems normal, but what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to a dark and complex web of secrets.

The film made its world premiere in March at the SXSW Film Festival, where it was awarded the special jury recognition for breakthrough performance for Freedson-Jackson. Vertical and DirecTV are eyeing a release in the fourth quarter and will launch an awards-season push.

The Strange Ones is a very powerful film that highlights new and promising talent that will surely leave an impact on audiences from all walks of life,” said Vertical co-president Rich Goldberg of the first-time helmers. “And we hope to capture the same spirit during awards season as we did last year with Other People and Under the Shadow.”

This is the ninth film released by Vertical with DirecTV. Other titles include William H. Macy’s The Layover, starring Alexandra Daddario, Kate Upton and Matt Barr; and Gabriele Muccino’s Fathers and Daughters, featuring Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and Aaron Paul.

The Strange Ones was produced by Sébastien Aubert, Michael Prall, Eric Schultz, Shani Geva and Daniela Taplin Lundberg. Anne Carey, Paul Finkel, Ozo Jaculewicz, Mynette Louie and Jason Potash executive produced.

The deal was negotiated by Goldberg and Peter Jarowey on behalf of Vertical; WME Global repped the filmmakers.
