CanWest farms out sports content for papers

TORONTO -- In its latest move to contain sports editorial costs, CanWest Global Communications Corp. on Tuesday said it has signed U.S.-based sports news agency PA SportsTicker to supply North American sports content for its domestic newspaper chain.

Winnipeg, Manitoba-based CanWest Global said PA SportsTicker will provide sports news and feature editorial for the media giant's 11 daily newspapers and Web sites.

In a separate content supply agreement unveiled in early February, CanWest Global recruited domestic headline sports channel the Score to supply sports coverage for its Global News Ontario TV newscasts.

On the newspaper side, PA SportsTicker will supply game stories for all major U.S. and collegiate sports, and breaking news coverage of major professional sports, including marquee events like the U.S. Open, World Series and Super Bowl.

Canwest Global is Canada's largest English-language newspaper publisher, operates two national TV networks and a string of cable channels here, and has media assets in New Zealand, Australia, Britain and the U.S. market.
