At first glance, model/actress Cara Delevingne seemed to be accessorizing her sleek Balmain jumpsuit with a cool-girl tousled blowout and mauve-y lip at the MTV Movie Awards, which were taped on Saturday night and aired on Sunday. But upon closer inspection, it became clear there was a little something different going on with her side-parted hair: a single, strategically placed cornrow.

Mara Roszak — who styles the manes of Emma Stone, Lily Collins and Brie Larson, to name a few — was responsible for the look, naturally. The ultra-creative hairstylist actually created a right angle with the braid, which separates the side part of Delevingne’s hair and continues down her hairline.

Says Roszak, "We wanted Cara’s hair down for an effortless kind of look. Her outfit had some edge to it, so the braid added a hint of interest and dimension to help round out the total look." The key products she used to create a perfectly textured, rough-dried look: L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray ($5). (Pro tip: If you don’t have much natural texture, put damp hair into loose braids before drying for added body and wave.)

On the small half-inch section she braided, Roszak first sprayed L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Hyper-Fix Putty ($5) and a few spritzes of L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray ($13) to keep it tight. She then pulled the braid forward and used tiny bobby pins to secure it, and curved the braid around to the side and tucked it behind the budding actress’s ear, finishing the look with a tiny invisible elastic. Voila. Says Roszak, "It’s a feminine look with a slight edge to it."
