Cartoon Net gives 'Props' to stars, kids
EmptyPro skier Jonny Moseley, tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams and Billie Jean King and NBA star Baron Davis are among the celebrities who have signed on to appear in Cartoon Network's upcoming "Props."
Moseley is hosting the one-hour special, which also will feature the rock band Hawthorne Heights, blues guitarist Jonny Lang, pro surfer Andy Irons, skateboarder Bob Burnquist and drag racer Jack Beckman.
The live-action "Props" will feature six "real-world kids" — chosen by viewers from among entries submitted online by kids and parents — who have demonstrated a talent, commitment and accomplishment in sports, the arts or a hobby. The special will show the kids as they are surprised by their heroes with a "once-in-a-lifetime experience customized to each of their individual passions."
The special marks somewhat of a departure for Cartoon Network as it is the channel's first effort in the reality programming arena. Cartoon has been entering new genres recently; in December, the network aired its first live-action/animation movie, "Re-animated," which is being turned into a series that debuts next month with the title "Out of Jimmy's Head."
"Props," part of Cartoon's "2007 Get Animated" initiative designed to encourage healthy lifestyles for kids, debuts at 7 p.m. Sept. 1, with encore airings at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sept. 2. It's understood that the program could become a regular special for the network but that no decisions have been made.
"Props" is produced by MEg TV; the company's Nancy Saslow and Carolyn Carmines are executive producing, with Dianne Fukami serving as senior producer.
