The original series aired 78 episodes, running from 1998 to 2005, earning two Emmy Awards in the process and spawning a 2003 feature film, a 10th anniversary special and a CG special, The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed, that aired in January.

The Powerpuff Girls followed Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup whose mission in life alternated between going to school, fighting crime and winning at hopscotch.

The reboot will be produced by Cartoon Network Studios and includes a licensing program that will roll out in all regions. The franchise has earned more than $2.5 billion in retail sales since its debut.

“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” said Rob Sorcher, chief content officer at Cartoon Network.  “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."
