Casting Agents Ros and John Hubbard Named Oscar Wilde Honorees

Casting agents Ros and John Hubbard will be among those honored at the sixth annual Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film event on Feb. 24 at the Ebell theater in Los Angeles.

The Hubbards have cast such films as The Commitments, The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Ultimatum and Green Zone and have helped start the film careers of such actors as Kate Winslet, Orlando Bloom, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Colin Farrell.

The couple formed Hubbard Casting in 1976 and have offices in Ireland and England. Trina Vargo, president of the U.S.-Ireland Alliance, which hosts the event, said it was a given that the Hubbards would be honored on the 20th anniversary of the Dublin-set musical drama The Commitments.

“We thought 2011 was the perfect year to recognize these two people who have had such a positive impact on the careers of so many actors,” Vargo said.

Vargo also noted that the event, also sponsored by the Irish Film Board and Culture Ireland, will be particularly significant given the dire economic situation in Ireland.

“Many people there, as well as friends of Ireland, have noted the importance of Irish culture as a crucial element to Ireland's recovery, both economically and psychologically,” she said. “This event is a celebration of Irish contributions to film, and we hope it will lead to even more collaborations of both artistic and commercial value.”

The invite-only bash has become a must-have ticket on the Thursday night before the Academy Awards. Additional 2011 honorees will be announced.

Past Oscar Wilde honorees include late THR staffer Steve Brennan, Rhys Meyers, J.J. Abrams, Saoirse Ronan, Seamus McGarvey, Hylda Queally, Brendan Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Colm Meaney, Jim Brooks, Van Morrison, Bill Monahan, Terry George, Neil Jordan, Jim Sheridan and David Holmes.
