Oscars 2015: Cate Blanchett's Eyes Have It
Makeup artist Jeanine Lobell shares the secrets to the actress' modern smoky look.
It doesn't take much for the naturally beautiful Cate Blanchett to stand out on the red carpet, but a dazzling turquoise Tiffany and Co. collar set against her simple black John Galliano for Maison Margiela gown took the actress' look to a whole new level.
What made it even more spectacular? Her smoky brown-and-purple eye — created by makeup artist Jeanine Lobell — which both played up the bold gems and helped pop Blanchett's blue peepers.
"That necklace was so incredible. It was the total jumping-off point for the whole look," said Lobell, who began by prepping the eye area with the brightening SK-II Facial Treatment Essence Eye ($95; the actress has been a brand ambassador for years), then turned to Giorgio Armani’s Eyes to Kill ($32) quad eye shadow palette in Tierra Sienna (#6) to coax out the color of Blanchett’s eyes.
After dusting a beige-rose shade across the lids, Lobell used a medium-tone brown in the crease to create a rounder eye. Outer corners and the lower lash line were emphasized with a plummy brown hue, followed by a touch of iridescent Eye & Brow Maestro cream shadow ($34) in Light Blonde along the lash line, "slightly dotted to give some depth to the eye," Lobell explained. The overall effect? A modern take on the iconic smoky eye that rounded out Blanchett’s flawless look.
