CBC dropping ax on 'Deacon Show'

TORONTO -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday said it is canceling "The Gill Deacon Show," its daytime lifestyle talker launched last November against ABC's "The View," which airs on the rival CTV network.

The public broadcaster said it is axing the daily homegrown chat show because of weak ratings. The last program will be taped May 31, with reruns to continue through the summer.

A CBC spokesman said the public broadcaster is exploring options to replace the Gill Deacon-hosted lifestyle show that is aimed at a female demographic that daily tunes into "The View," "Oprah" and other popular American fare.

The replacement for "The Gill Deacon Show" could be announced as early as next month when the CBC unveils its fall 2007 schedule during the Canadian upfront presentations following the Los Angeles Screenings.
