CBS lines up summer schedule

CBS revealed a summer lineup that includes about as twice as much original programming as the network typically schedules.

Headlined by the new dramas "Swingtown" and "Flashpoint," CBS' summer lineup contains a mix of previously announced scripted shows, reality series and specials that total nearly 90 hours.

After repeating shows to modest ratings during the writers strike, CBS was keen to stock its summer with originals to help prevent another ratings drop-off.

"This summer presents an opportunity for us to regain the faith of our viewers with original programming," said Kelly Kahl, senior executive vp scheduling at CBS.

CBS is putting "Swingtown" in the key 10 p.m. Thursday slot, where it will enjoy a lead-out from "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" repeats. "Flashpoint" is in the less prestigious 10 p.m. Friday period, but Kahl noted that it's a good fit for a "Numbers" lead-in.

Other shows include the retooled game show "Million Dollar Password" (8 p.m. Sundays) and the reality series "Jingles" (9 p.m. Sundays) and "Greatest American Dog" (8 p.m. Thursdays). Specials include the Tony Awards (June 15), "AFI's 10 Top 10" (June 17) and at least two mixed martial arts Saturday night fight specials.
