CBS writes 'Rules' for March return
EmptyCBS will return the midseason comedy "Rules of Engagement" to its schedule in March, replacing freshman series "Worst Week."
The move was expected as Sony/CBS Par's "Rules" performed well for the network last year, averaging 10.9 million viewers and a 4.1 rating among adults 18-49. The show will bow March 3 after "Two and a Half Men" and take CBS' Monday lineup through the rest of the season. CBS is expected to make the announcement today.
"Worst" will wrap its debut season Feb. 9, and the network likely will air repeats in the slot until the "Rules" premiere. CBS ordered 17 total episodes of "Worst," putting the half-hour in an unusual limbo of a series that wasn't cut short yet wasn't given a full order.
Fellow freshman "Gary Unmarried" also received a slightly shortened order — 20 episodes — but CBS has dubbed that a "full season," and a renewal seems likely.
As for "Worst," CBS has not issued a verdict on its fate. The show is the ratings gap in Monday night's lineup despite having the highest-rated comedy lead-in on TV. Yet "Worst" has averaged fairly healthy numbers for a freshman series (9.9 million viewers, 3.1 rating).
