Celebrity Hotelier Andre Balazs Accused of Groping by Jason Bateman's Wife and Others
Amanda Anka alleges Balazs groped her during a dinner party after the premiere of 'Horrible Bosses 2.'
Andre Balazs, the hospitality giant who reigns over one of Hollywood’s most beloved properties, the Chateau Marmont, is the latest figure to be accused of sexual misconduct in a story published by The New York Times on Thursday.
Balazs built his hotel and dining empire with the boutique chain the Standard, the Mercer in SoHo and the Chiltern Firehouse in London, where in November 2014 he allegedly groped actress Amanda Anka at a dinner party after the premiere of her husband Jason Bateman’s film Horrible Bosses 2.
According to the newspaper, Balazs offered to give a tour to the evening's guests, which included Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis, which led them to climb a firehouse-style ladder. When Anka, who was wearing a burgundy leather dress, climbed up the ladder, Balazs grabbed her crotch.
Last week, the couple confirmed the incident in a statement released by their publicist, according to the Times. “On behalf of Jason Bateman and Amanda Anka, we can confirm that the account of André Balazs’s outrageous and vile behavior on that night in London is factual,” the statement said. “His actions were dealt with at the time.”
The story alleges two other instances of abuse, including one by a former employee, Sarah, who worked at the front desk of the Chateau Marmont in the early 1990s, and another by a 26-year-old female media executive who is not named in the piece but is described as the daughter of a prominent Manhattan couple.
The Chateau Marmont is a popular destination for both the Hollywood and fashion industries, with a number of star-studded events held there, including the recent CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show, Emmys, Oscars and Golden Globes parties.
Balazs, who has been romantically linked to Uma Thurman and Chelsea Handler, has been accused of groping by several women ever since news broke last month about film mogul Harvey Weinstein and the many powerful men in the industry who have committed sexual misconduct, according to the Times.
The story on Balazs' sexual misconduct broke as accusations mount against several powerful Hollywood men. Also on Thursday, the newspaper posted an exposé about Louis C.K. allegedly masturbating in front of multiple women.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Balazs' publicist for comment.
