Author James Naremore will discuss his upcoming study, 'Charles Burnett: A Cinema of Symbolic Knowledge.'
James Naremore will discuss his upcoming book Charles Burnett: A Cinema of Symbolic Knowledge as he hosts the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 15th Film Scholars Lecture on Sept. 7 at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.
Naremore’s book, which the University of California Press will publish in October, focuses on the African-American filmmaker whose films include Killer of Sheep (1978) and The Glass Shield (1994). The lecture will be followed by a screening of Burnett’s To Sleep With Anger (1990).
The lecture series spotlights recipients of the Academy Film Scholars grant. Established in 2000, the Academy Film Scholars program is designed to stimulate and support the creation of new and significant works of film scholarship about aesthetic, cultural, educational, historical, theoretical or scientific aspects of theatrical motion pictures.
