'Chef Flynn' to Open Berlin Festival's Culinary Cinema Sidebar
Cameron Yates' documentary, about culinary wunderkind Flynn McGarry, kicks off a lineup of food-themed features and documentaries.
Cameron Yates' documentary Chef Flynn, about teenage culinary sensation Flynn McGarry, will open this year's Culinary Cinema, the sidebar of food-themed films that runs during the Berlin International Film Festival.
The documentary had its premiere at Sundance and will kick off the Berlin event on Feb.18 with its international premiere. McGarry will attend Berlin and, on Feb. 22, take part in the festival's Youth Food Cinema day, cooking together with Berlin school kids.
The menu for the 12th Culinary Cinema sidebar, held under the motto “life is delicate,” includes a further eight documentaries and a single feature — Ramen Teh from acclaimed Singapore director Eric Khoo (Be With Me), which will have its world premiere in Berlin. The story of Ramen Teh follows a young man who sets off on a culinary journey through Singapore in an effort to find out more about his deceased parents' past.
Among the food docs on display this year will be the road movie Cuban Food Stories from director Asori Soto; The Quest of Alain Ducasse, Gilles de Maistre's portrait of the French food visionary; and Our Blood Is Wine, director Emily Railsback's look at attempts to revive the wine growing traditions in Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Several of the films will be accompanied by a themed meal prepared by some of Germany's top chefs, with the likes of Thomas Buhner, Sonja Fruhsammer, Michael Kempf, Flynn McGarry and The Duc Ngo this year serving up dishes inspired by the Culinary Cinema movies.
The 2018 Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb. 15-Feb. 25.
