Chello zones out of Singapore

Reality TV service may leave Asia

SINGAPORE -- Liberty Media's Chello Zone is pulling its Reality Zone channel out of Singapore, telling dominant cable network StarHub that the reality television service is being discontinued from June, according to Patrick Lim, head of StarHub's cable TV services.

The move has fueled speculation that the channel is going dark in the rest of the region. Chello Zone has not yet issued any statement on its plans for the region.

Lim was speaking during a briefing on StarHub's channel repackaging Thursday.

The revamped news and entertainment packages include four new entertainment channels -- NBC Universal's Sci Fi and Universal Channel, Sony Pictures Entertainment Asia's AXN Beyond, and AETN's Biography Channel.

Chello Zone spokesperson Gabrielle Grubanovich declined comment on market speculation this month about possible changes to the company's strategy in Asia. She said an official statement would be made in due course.

Reality has already exited Japan, selling the slot to NBC Universal in November. NBC Universal launched the Sci Fi Channel in Japan in April.
