'Chengdu' to close Venice Fest

Project co-directed by Fruit Chan and Cui Jian

ROME -- “Chengdu, I Love You," ("Chengdu, Wo Ai Ni") hailed as the first-ever science fiction film from the People's Republic of China, will be the official closing film at the 66th Venice Film Festival, officials said Tuesday.

The love story, a directorial collaboration between noted Hong Kong director Fruit Chan and iconic Chinese rocker Cui Jian, intertwines two stories -- each directed by one of the directors -- set in the Chinese city of Chengdu, one from 1976 and another from 2029. It will screen out of competition on the final day of the Sept. 2-12 festival, directly after the award ceremony.

The film will mark the fourth appearance in Venice for Chan since 2000, a run that included a special honorable mention for “Hwajangshil eodieyo” ("Public Toilet") in 2002.

Cui, meanwhile, is a rock pioneer in China, where he has appeared on stage with the Rolling Stones and is known for anti-establishment lyrics.
